Once the profile has been suitably disinfected so as to allow entrance into the Clean Room, it is fed into this Parabolic Analytical Distiller. The single most expensive piece of equipment at headquarters, the Distiller was specially built for us by a team of chemical information specialists in Zurich - there are only two others like it in existence.

In this view of the back of the Distiller, we can see its two principal exit pipes. The larger of the two empties into a duct behind the wall. Waste material from the distillation process is pumped out here, then drops down hundreds of meters into the Lower Caverns, where the Lava Mites use it as food. The tube on the left contains the protein solution we are interested in, carrying it two floors farther up the tower. |
